All things haircare can be costly, time consuming and an all-round pain in the scalp. No one knows this better than a parent who has to look after not only their own natural hair but that of their entire family as well. To make wash day as easy as possible, there needs to be a plan in place, and although not everyone has the same needs due to age, hair type and preferred hairstyles, as long as the fundamentals are there, it’s a good first step.

“Understanding natural hair and how to work with it to get the best results is necessary, and even though there isn’t a fix-all solution when it comes to this, there are steps that can be put into place when it comes to a family’s natural hair care routine,” explains Revlon Realistic Special Feelings.

When making a routine easy enough for the entire family to do, it takes the stress out of wash day. The basics need to be simple, and do able:

Add oils and creams to the hair before you begin washing your hair. This will make it more manageable. The texture of the hair will determine the type of oil that you use. Start by dividing the hair into four different sections to make sure that your hair is equally saturated by the oil. Use your fingers to detangle your hair and then put the four sections into knots. This can be done an hour before washing or the even the night before.

Use a conditioner-based cleanser to clean the hair and the scalp, as it won’t strip away any natural oil. Take out one of the knots and wash it with water. Apply the cleanser from the root to the tip and use your fingers as a comb to make sure that the entire section gets enough of the cleanser. Repeat for each section, and either put the sections back into knots or a two-strand twist. Rinse out the product thoroughly to avoid any residue.

From here it is time to detangle. Due to the prior steps, it shouldn’t be too difficult. Use a conditioner that will allow you to guide a wide tooth comb easily through the hair. Keep your hair in sections, and perhaps try and detangle from the bottom of the hair, and slowly work the way up to the roots.

Now it’s time for a deep conditioner. Take a section and apply the conditioner from the root to the tip, and then put it back into its knot. Once you have completed each section, put the hair into a shower cap and leave for 5 to 10 minutes, and then rinse each section again using your fingers to detangle.

Now it is time to style. While your hair is wet, two-strand twist or braid your hair applying leave-in conditioners, creams and oils as you go to make sure that your hair is well moisturised and has a brilliant shine. Let the hair dry and in the morning take the style out to reveal gorgeous curls. The style options from here are endless.
