Ipsy’s Upcoming Tetris Makeup Collection Celebrates the Video Game’s 35th Anniversary.
It’s hard to explain to anyone younger than late-30-something what it was like to experience the nationwide metamorphosis that was life before and after the launch of the Nintendo Entertainment System. Even harder to explain how everyone’s brains seemed to change once Tetris was introduced on the console in the late ’80s. While it was fun to spend hours playing video games like Super Mario Bros. and Duck Hunt. Tetris felt like an obsession — an obligation, even.
Quite possibly the most frustrating video game ever created. The taunting 8-bit version of “Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy” didn’t help. It was also incredibly satisfying to fit the falling tetrominos together and watch completed horizontal rows disappear. My dad and I played it so often that I would regularly see it when my eyes closed as I tried to fall asleep.
Even though Tetris has been updated and made available on nearly every imaginable digital device. I haven’t touched it since my early teens, for fear that I’d be sucked back into the neverending, hypnotizing puzzle. But now it seems inevitable thanks to something that calls to me like a siren song, something that sucker-punches my Achilles heel. Something I never saw coming: a Tetris makeup collection.
The Launch Of The Tetris x Ipsy Glam Bag
June 1 marks the launch of the Tetris x Ipsy Glam Bag and cosmetic collection to honor the 35th anniversary of the video game’s release. (For those trying to do the math, Tetris became widely available via NES a few years later.) In it is a wide range of colorful makeup products with packaging, names, and shades inspired by the mesmerizing game, and I want the whole damn nostalgic thing.
Among the more exciting elements of the collection are two eye shadow palettes. Game On and Block Party, each with six highly pigmented shades. Game On contains Game Changer (matte mustard), Stack It Up (matte pink), Game Day (pearl pink), Block Party (pearl rose gold), Game Night (metallic chartreuse), and Game Over (matte indigo). Block Party contains Skyline (matte chestnut brown), Back-to-Back (matte baby pink), T-Spin (metallic pewter), Line Clear (pearl magenta), Top Out (pearl royal blue), and High Score (pearl eggplant). The shades Game Night, T-Spin, Block Party, and Top Out will also be available as singles.
