1. Can you please tell us more about your business?

TOSH Detergents is a 100% female-owned manufacturer of sustainable cleaning products based in Centurion. We create high-quality, affordable detergents using indigenous knowledge and modern innovation. Our business empowers rural and township women through micro-distribution and local sourcing. We’re stocked in major retailers including Shoprite, Pick n Pay, Makro Online, and Takealot. At TOSH, we believe in cleaning homes while transforming lives.

2. When, how, and why did you start your business?

I started TOSH Detergents in March 2021 during the COVID-19 pandemic, when hygiene became a top priority. Using soap-making skills passed down from my mother, I began creating products at home. I saw a gap for affordable, high-quality cleaning products made locally. The business was self-funded with personal savings and later grew through sales. My “why” was to uplift women and create sustainable jobs through manufacturing.

As the business grew, I formalised operations, set up a factory in Centurion, and built a dedicated team, including youth and persons with disabilities. I also partnered with women in rural Limpopo to harvest raw materials and with township women to distribute and sell in their communities.

My goal was never just profit; it was impact. TOSH became a vehicle to empower others, particularly women who often get left behind. Today, every product we make tells a story of resilience, heritage, and hope.

3. What is your role in the business?

I am the Founder and Managing Director of TOSH Detergents. My role includes overseeing operations, strategy, and business development. I lead the team, manage key partnerships, and drive the vision for impact and growth. I also play a hands-on role in mentoring staff and ensuring quality across production. Every day, I work to build a brand that empowers and transforms lives.

4. Where did you study, and what did you study?

I hold a BTech degree in Mineral Resource Management from the University of Johannesburg. I also studied Mining Surveying and Project Management through UNISA. My academic journey began with a diploma in Building Construction (Civil Engineering). To sharpen my business skills, I completed entrepreneurship courses at GIBS and Johannesburg Business School. This mix of technical and business education shaped my leadership approach.

5. How did you finance your business?

I financed TOSH Detergents using my personal savings at the start. I began small, producing in my home garage and reinvesting every sale back into the business. As demand grew, I scaled gradually without taking on debt. Our growth was driven by consistent sales and strong community support. Today, we continue to grow through revenue and strategic partnerships.

6. Describe your average workday, if such a thing exists.

My average workday starts early with prayer and meditation, an hour at the gym, and officially reporting on duty at the office. I do team check-ins and review production schedules. I oversee operations, meet with suppliers or clients, and handle strategic planning. I also spend time mentoring staff, managing admin, and checking on product quality. No two days are ever the same. I often jump between the factory floor and business meetings. Each day is driven by purpose, passion, and problem-solving.

7. How do you balance your home life and your work life?

Balancing home and work life takes intention and discipline. I set clear boundaries and prioritise tasks to make time for family and rest. I rely on a supportive team and delegate where needed to avoid burnout. I also schedule quiet time for reflection and self-care. It’s not always easy, but staying grounded in my purpose keeps me focused.

8. What drives you and inspires you?

I’m driven by the desire to create a lasting impact, especially for women and youth in disadvantaged communities. Seeing others grow through opportunities we create keeps me inspired. I’m motivated by my roots, my mother’s resilience, and the power of heritage. Every challenge fuels my determination to do better and reach further. Knowing that our work changes lives gives me purpose every day.

9. Where and when do you have your best ideas?

I often get my best ideas early in the morning, quiet moments, like during prayer or journaling, help me reflect and find inspiration. I also find creative sparks while walking in nature. Engaging with my team or listening to our customers often triggers practical ideas. Sometimes, ideas come when I least expect them, even while showering! I’ve learned to keep a notebook nearby to capture thoughts as they come.

10. Where and how do you market/advertise your business for sales leads?

We market TOSH Detergents through a mix of online and offline strategies. Our products are promoted on social media platforms like Facebook and Instagram, where we engage directly with customers. We also use e-commerce platforms like Takealot and Amazon to reach broader markets. In-store promotions and partnerships with township distributors help us build local visibility. Word-of-mouth from satisfied customers remains one of our strongest sales drivers.

11. What is next for your business?

Next for TOSH Detergents is scaling up production and expanding our footprint across Africa. We aim to secure more retail listings and enter regional export markets. We’re also launching a hygiene services division to offer cleaning solutions beyond products. Continued innovation and job creation, especially for women and youth, remain a priority. We plan to invest in greener packaging and sustainable sourcing. The goal is growth with impact, rooted in community empowerment.

12. What advice would you give to female entrepreneurs hoping to start their own business?

Start with what you have and where you are; don’t wait for perfect conditions. Believe in your vision, even when others don’t, and stay consistent. Build a strong support network and don’t be afraid to ask for help. Learn from every challenge; they’re part of your growth. Most importantly, lead with purpose; your “why” will keep you going when it gets tough.
