1. What core leadership principles have guided you in steering organizations through complex, highly regulated environments?

Having spent a significant part of my career in external audit, the core leadership principles that have guided me through complex, highly regulated environments are adaptability, risk-based and critical thinking, effective collaboration, and strong stakeholder engagement.

2. How has your background in auditing across both the public and private sectors shaped your leadership approach at Bonitas?

External audit cultivates essential leadership traits such as adaptability, agility in navigating complex environments, and the ability to lead diverse teams under pressure. It also sharpens problem-solving skills and encourages a collaborative mindset, which are qualities that are critical in aligning teams, managing risk, and driving results in a regulated and fast-changing landscape like healthcare. This experience is enabling me to lead with both a strategic view and a strong operational grounding.

3. What have been some of the most significant challenges you’ve faced in transitioning to the healthcare sector, and how have you approached them?”

A key challenge is navigating the impact of persistent macroeconomic pressures that reduce the affordability of medical schemes for members. This threatens both membership growth and retention, ultimately affecting the scheme’s overall financial sustainability. Addressing this requires strategies that carefully balance maintaining financial health with delivering inclusive and accessible healthcare coverage to ensure long-term viability and equitable service for all members.

4. In your experience, what are the key factors leaders must consider when navigating sectors under intense regulatory scrutiny?

Leading in a highly regulated environment requires a strong focus on ethical leadership, sound governance, and a proactive approach to compliance. It’s important to stay abreast of regulatory changes, embed compliance into day-to-day operations, apply robust risk management, and maintain transparency with all stakeholders.

5. You bring deep governance expertise to your role. How do you ensure compliance without compromising agility or innovation?

I see governance as an enabler rather than a constraint. By integrating compliance into day-to-day operations and decision-making, it becomes part of how we work and not a barrier to innovation. I focus on creating a culture where teams understand the purpose behind governance, which encourages responsible innovation within clearly defined boundaries. This allows us to remain agile and responsive, while still upholding our regulatory obligations.

6. How do you balance the financial imperatives of the scheme with the need to remain responsive to evolving regulatory reforms in healthcare?

Balancing financial sustainability with evolving regulatory reforms requires a strategic and forward-thinking approach. This involves aligning the scheme’s financial strategy with regulatory developments, engaging scenario planning, and fostering collaboration across clinical, operational, and finance teams while ensuring members have access to quality and affordable healthcare.

7. Bonitas operates in a fast-changing healthcare environment. How do you lead through uncertainty and continuous change?

Operating in a fast-changing healthcare environment requires adaptable leadership. This means making informed, data-driven decisions, staying close to emerging trends, and engaging regularly with both internal and external stakeholders.

8. What role does financial leadership play in driving sustainable transformation within a medical scheme like Bonitas?

Financial leadership is pivotal to driving sustainable transformation within a medical scheme like Bonitas. It involves influencing strategic decisions that balance financial stability with member needs. Strong financial leadership ensures efficient resource allocation, proactive risk management, and a focus on long-term viability. By collaborating closely with clinical and operational teams, financial leadership helps to embed value-driven approaches that foster innovation, affordability, and better health outcomes for members.

9. You’ve worked across transport, tourism, and financial services. What leadership lessons have you brought from those sectors into healthcare?

My experience across highly regulated sectors like transport, tourism, and financial services has shaped key leadership lessons I apply in healthcare. These include the importance of agility in dynamic environments, robust risk management, and effective stakeholder engagement. I’ve also learned the value of customer focus and clear communication within diverse teams. This background enables me to lead confidently through healthcare’s complex regulatory demands while fostering collaboration and delivering sustainable, quality results.

10. Are there any practices or models from other industries that you believe healthcare could benefit from adopting?

Healthcare can benefit significantly by adopting practices from other industries. For example, advanced data analytics and predictive modeling from financial services can enhance decision-making and strengthen risk management. Additionally, pension fund reforms in investment strategies, which are regulatory, offer valuable insights on maximising returns while maintaining effective risk controls. These reforms can be applied within the healthcare sector to safeguard the financial sustainability of medical schemes. By combining these approaches, we can build a more efficient, adaptable, and financially resilient healthcare system.

11. How do you build trust and foster accountability within teams operating in high-pressure, compliance-heavy sectors?

Building trust and accountability in high-pressure, compliance-focused environments begins with clear, transparent communication and well-defined expectations. I focus on fostering a culture where team members understand their responsibilities and how their work contributes to both organisational goals and compliance standards. Leading with integrity and consistency sets the tone and builds credibility. I also promote open feedback and teamwork, empowering individuals to take ownership while supporting one another through challenges. This approach helps create a strong, accountable culture, even in demanding circumstances.

12. What advice would you give to emerging leaders looking to build resilient, ethical leadership careers in regulated industries?

My advice to emerging leaders in regulated industries would be to prioritise integrity and commit to continuous learning. Resilience means adapting to change without compromising your core values. Cultivate strong relationships across teams and stakeholders, as effective collaboration and clear communication are crucial. Use risk management to inform your decisions, but don’t let regulatory demands hinder innovation.
