Don’t Forget Your Holiday Allergy Kit

The festive season should be about sunshine, braais, and road trips, until allergies crash the party. Between blooming flora, unfamiliar holiday homes, and long drives with the windows down, even the most careful planners can end up sneezing throughout their getaway. That’s why having an allergy kit on hand can make all the difference between a sniffly weekend and a carefree holiday.

“If you or someone in your family suffers from allergies, you’ll know that symptoms can strike at any time, especially in summer,” explains Catherine Oluwadare, brand manager for Karvol. “The change in scenery and pollen count can trigger sneezing fits or itchy eyes, while packing into shared spaces often means exposure to new detergents, pet dander, or fragrances.”

Keeping a well-stocked allergy kit on holiday can help you react quickly before things get worse, and your holiday is spent sneezing. It’s your first line of defence: a holiday with no panicked pharmacy runs required.

Include the following in your allergy kit:
  • Antihistamines: Whether you prefer tablets or a non-drowsy syrup, make sure you have enough for everyone who needs it. Always chat with your doctor before taking any medication.
  • Decongestant: When your nose blocks up from pollen or dust, reach for your Karvol capsules and room spray. The gentle yet effective vapours help open nasal passages and ease breathing, perfect for keeping in your travel bag for instant relief wherever your holiday takes you.
  • Eye drops: Ideal for itchy or watery eyes after a day outdoors. Look for preservative-free ones if you have sensitive eyes.
  • Soothing cream or ointment: A mild hydrocortisone or calamine lotion can help calm skin rashes or insect bites.
  • Wet wipes and tissues: Keep a travel pack in your bag for on-the-go relief (and to clean up after those sneezes).

If you’re staying in a rental or holiday home, pack a small disinfectant or sterilising spray, such as the Milton sterilising spray. A quick wipe-down of surfaces, linen, and air vents can reduce dust and allergens, especially if the location has been locked up for a while.

Remember to store your allergy kit somewhere easy to reach, such as a glove compartment or your day bag, and not leave it buried at the bottom of your suitcase. Allergies rarely give a warning before they strike.

“South African summers are too beautiful to spend sniffling indoors. A little preparation goes a long way, so pack your allergy kit and hit the road knowing you’re ready for whatever comes your way,” says Oluwadare.
