Every Boerie Roll Deserves a Little Extra This Heritage Day

Few things are more synonymous with South African food culture than boerewors sizzling over a braai, especially on Heritage Day. Our love for this traditional favourite is impressive: one of South Africa’s top supermarket retailers reported that close to six million kilograms of one brand of boerewors were sold over 12 months, a reminder of how firmly boerewors has earned its place at the South African table. With Heritage Day around the corner, it’s the perfect time to celebrate this much-loved local staple with a fresh twist.

“While the classic boerie roll will always have its place around the fire, Heritage Day is also an opportunity to experiment with familiar flavours and put a fresh spin on the dishes we know and love,” comments Jillian Laing, representing the Love Macadamia movement.

This Macadamia and Tomato Braai Relish by Chef Kholiwe Rafu does just that. Made with macadamia oil and toasted macadamia nuts, it adds a delicious combination of sweet, tangy, and gently spiced flavours to a classic boerie roll. It’s simple to make and can also be served alongside pap or even on a cheesy braai broodjie.

Macadamia and Tomato Braai Relish

Ingredients:

  • 2 tbsp macadamia oil
  • 1 large onion
  • 1 tsp tomato paste
  • 3 medium-sized tomatoes
  • 1 tsp garlic and ginger paste
  • 1 tsp paprika
  • 1 tsp hot curry powder
  • ½ tsp dried thyme
  • 1 tbsp sugar
  • ½ tsp salt
  • ½ tsp black pepper
  • ¼ cup water
  • ⅓ cup toasted macadamia nuts
  • Boerewors
  • Hotdog rolls

Method:

  1. Heat the macadamia oil in a pan over medium heat and sauté the onion until soft and lightly caramelised.
  2. Add the tomato paste, tomatoes and garlic and ginger paste, then stir in the paprika, hot curry powder and dried thyme.
  3. Add the sugar, salt, black pepper and water. Simmer gently for 10–15 minutes until the tomatoes have broken down and the relish has thickened.
  4. Stir through the toasted macadamia nuts and adjust the seasoning to taste.
  5. While the relish cooks, braai or pan-fry the boerewors over medium heat until cooked through and nicely browned. Lightly toast the hotdog rolls.
  6. Fill each roll with boerewors and generously spoon over the warm tomato and macadamia relish. Serve immediately.

Heritage Day is ultimately about celebrating the traditions, flavours and people that make South Africa unique – and food has a special way of bringing all three together. So, if you are hosting a crowd or keeping things relaxed with family and friends, light the fire, put the boerewors on the braai and give this easy relish a try for a delicious take on a true South African favourite.
