To mark 25 Years of Excellence, The Source Solutions Events & Marketing reflects on its growth, resilience, and consistent delivery in high-stakes environments. Founded by Vanessa Beyers after an unexpected opportunity following a company closure, the business has grown into a trusted name in the events and marketing industry. In this Q&A, Vanessa shares insights on building a business from the ground up, overcoming challenges, and sustaining long-term success.
1. What sparked the idea to start the business after the company’s closure?
It wasn’t so much an idea as it was an unexpected moment that required a decision. The original owner of the business decided to exit and suggested that we purchase a shelved CC, keep the equipment, and continue servicing the client base we had been working with for the previous five years. In that moment, we were allowed to take over the business.
Initially, it was simply a way to bridge the gap while exploring other options. I was only 23 at the time and very “green,” so there was a lot of uncertainty around whether it would work. But we also had nothing to lose. What started as a temporary solution quickly became, “Let’s follow the momentum and see where this takes us.”
2. At what point did you realise this opportunity could become something sustainable?
The turning point came when clients chose to stay with us, not because they had to, but because they trusted us. Trust and reliability quickly became the foundation of the business. As we continued to deliver consistently and clients kept coming back, a sense of stability began to form.
Over time, as the years passed and the business continued to grow, I realised that this was no longer temporary; it had become something sustainable and meaningful.
3. What were the toughest challenges in the early years of building the business?
In the early years, the biggest challenge was financial, operational, and personal. There was no blueprint, no safety net, and no guarantee of success. The business partnership I entered into was not by design, but by default, as we were both presented with the same opportunity. We were very different individuals, at different stages in our lives, with different expectations and no clearly defined shared vision. This ultimately led to my partner resigning at the end of 2007.
At the same time, I was wearing multiple hats, managing clients, operations, finances, and growth all at once. It was a constant balancing act. In hindsight, those challenges were invaluable. They taught me how to build and run a business from the ground up, often without guidance or experience. They built resilience, sharpened my decision-making, and laid the foundation for how we operate today.
You have to “walk the walk.” You have to make mistakes before you can refine your processes and systems, and even then, they never stop evolving.
4. Many businesses fail within five years. What helped you defy those odds?
Consistency and relationships. We focused on delivering consistently high standards while building genuine, long-term relationships with our clients. That created trust, and trust creates longevity. We also remained adaptable, always willing to evolve, refine, and improve. It was never about quick wins; it was about sustainable growth.
On a personal level, it comes down to determination. I’ve always believed that nothing is impossible. I don’t dwell on yesterday’s challenges; I face each new day with renewed determination and gratitude. I enjoy challenges. I am naturally solutions-driven and resourceful, and I will always find a way forward.
5. What does operating in a “no-failure” environment look like day to day?
A “no-failure” environment doesn’t mean things never go wrong; it means accountability and solutions are non-negotiable. It’s about how quickly you respond, resolve, and move forward that defines success.
Day to day, it comes down to preparation, attention to detail, and having the right team and systems in place to minimise risk. It also requires a team that takes ownership and remains committed to delivering excellence, regardless of pressure. Ultimately, it’s a mindset – solutions-driven, proactive, and focused on outcomes.
6. How do you ensure precision and consistency under constant pressure?
Precision and consistency come from structure. We rely on clearly defined processes, strong project management, and a culture of accountability where every detail matters. At the same time, experience plays a significant role. Having operated in high-stakes environments for many years allows us to anticipate challenges and respond proactively.
7. What role has adaptability played in reaching the 25-year milestone?
Adaptability has been critical. The business landscape is constantly evolving, and the ability to pivot, innovate, and respond to change is what ensures longevity. A defining example was during COVID-19, when we transitioned into virtual and hybrid events in record time.
Adaptability is not just about reacting; it’s about staying ahead and being open to change before it becomes necessary. Personally, I see change as an opportunity. I’m always looking for ways to adapt, innovate, and expand. Change is expansive—it opens the door to new opportunities and new ways of thinking.
8. Can you share a defining moment that tested the resilience of the business?
The COVID-19 pandemic was undoubtedly one of the most defining tests of resilience. Our entire industry was disrupted overnight. Events were cancelled, uncertainty was high, and we had to make rapid decisions to sustain the business. What stands out to me is the mindset we chose in that moment.
When lockdown was announced, I told my team that although I didn’t know exactly what lay ahead, I felt excited. I believed that change, even through adversity, would bring new energy, new opportunities, and new ways of doing things. That mindset carried us through. We pivoted quickly, supported our clients, and found new ways to deliver value.
9. How have client expectations evolved, and how have you stayed ahead?
I’ve always believed that we are more than a supplier; we are a strategic partner to our clients, and we’ve consistently lived up to that. Client expectations have evolved significantly. Today, they expect innovation, cost efficiency, meticulous delivery, and strong corporate governance. This includes areas such as empowerment, sustainability, ESG, cybersecurity, POPIA compliance, upfront funding, extended payment terms, and third-party vendor management.
These expectations have pushed us to continuously review, refine, and strengthen our structures, processes, and policies. In doing so, we’ve not only met preferred supplier requirements we’ve also accelerated our growth, differentiated ourselves in the market, and built a scalable, future-ready business.
10. What systems or processes have been critical to maintaining compliance and delivery?
Strong operational systems are essential to everything we do. This includes structured project management processes, detailed planning frameworks, and robust RSVP and delegate management systems. These ensure efficiency, accuracy, and consistency across every project. These systems allow us to maintain high levels of compliance while still delivering creatively and effectively.
11. Looking back, what decisions had the biggest impact on your long-term success?
Taking full ownership of the business in 2007 was one of the most impactful decisions I made. It allowed me to redefine the vision and build a structure aligned with long-term growth. Another key decision was shifting from a founder-centric model to a team-driven business, empowering people, delegating effectively, and building systems that allow the business to grow beyond one individual.
12. What advice would you give to entrepreneurs building in high-stakes industries today?
Focus on building strong foundations from the start – processes, systems, and relationships. Don’t try to do everything yourself. Surround yourself with the right people, trust their expertise, and focus on your strengths; you simply can’t afford to. The sooner you build a network of professionals around you, the faster your business will grow.
Most importantly, remain solutions-driven. Challenges are inevitable, but how you respond to them defines your business. Consistency, integrity, and adaptability will always set you apart.
