1. Can you please tell us more about your business?
Cosmopolitan Sourcing is a female-owned and managed fabric and wallpaper sourcing company, that specialises in supplying fabrics for luxury safari lodges, hotels, restaurants, resorts, and other hospitality establishments.
2. When, how and why did you start your business?
I started Cosmopolitan Sourcing, because of my passion for the textile industry. With years of experience in fabrics and a keen eye for design, I saw an opportunity to utilize my skills and expertise in a growing market. The potential to offer unique and high-quality fabrics and wallpapers for hospitality projects inspired me to launch the business and provide a specialised service.
3. What is your role in the business?
I am the Managing Director of Cosmopolitan Sourcing.
4. Where did you study and what did you study?
I studied interior design at the Design School of Southern Africa, but before that, I was lucky enough to get hands-on training on the job. At the age of 22, I started working at St Leger & Viney as a tea lady. I was very interested in the showroom and I used to ask a lot of questions. Before long, I was promoted to showroom assistant, and from there I climbed the ladder to showroom consultant, then showroom manager, and finally sales consultant. After 23 years at St Leger & Viney, I have launched Cosmopolitan Sourcing.
5. How did you finance your business?
I managed to negotiate and secure a start-up loan through a financier who also guides and mentors me on the financial management of my business.
6. Describe your average workday, if such a thing exists.
In truth, every day is different in this business – something I love about it! My schedule varies depending on client needs, trade shows, or other events, but most days I start my work day at 8h00 with a glass of hot water and lemon and check my emails. Then it’s off to client appointments and other meetings. To end off I review what’s been accomplished and follow up on any outstanding issues to ensure everything runs smoothly and our customers are satisfied.
7. How do you balance your home life and your work life?
We are always “on” and ready to assist clients from Monday to Friday. Balancing work and home life is essential, so I implement time management strategies and engage in activities that support my well-being. I make sure to establish a structured schedule that allows me to focus on work during office hours and dedicate quality time to my family and personal interests outside of work. I also ensure that I communicate effectively with my team to ensure work is dealt with efficiently. This approach helps me maintain the energy and focus needed for both my professional and personal life.
8. What drives you and inspires you?
The opportunity to inspire and empower young women with my story and successes drives me. I am also constantly inspired by the power of fabrics and wallpapers to transform spaces. I simply love working with interior designers and architects, bringing together people, places, and fabric and working together to curate unforgettable interiors. I love what I do. Being able to add value to my clients and coming up with solutions to their briefs is just so exciting. This industry brings constant growth and stimulation. No two days are the same.
9. Where and when do you have your best ideas?
My best ideas come to me in the showroom, surrounded by samples and immersed in the creative process of selecting fabrics and wall coverings. Being hands-on in projects and closely involved with the materials inspires fresh and innovative ideas.
10. Where and how do you market/advertise your business for sales leads?
We market our business primarily through social media, leveraging platforms to showcase our latest offerings and connect with potential clients. Word of mouth is another powerful tool, as satisfied customers often refer us to others. Additionally, we use targeted email marketing campaigns to reach out to our existing client base and keep them informed about new products and promotions. I also have a great PR team!
11. What is next for your business?
Our next goal is to drive growth by establishing an international presence, with neighbouring African countries as our key target markets. We aim to tap into the country’s growing economy and expand our consumer base, increasing our global footprint. This strategic growth plan will help us reach new heights and bring our unique products to a wider audience. Of course, we will always remain proudly South African.
12. What advice would you give to female entrepreneurs hoping to start their own business?
Anything is possible if you focus, work hard, and strive. But equally important is the right industry leadership ‒ people who will nurture talent and develop and empower young people. The best piece of advice I ever received was to treat others the way they want to be treated.
