1. Tell us a bit about yourself.

    My name is Peaceful S Makhoba. I’m a friendly person and very passionate about my interests.  Outside of work, I like to relax and spend time with family and friends. I enjoy the challenge of accurately estimating electrical projects and collaborating with my colleagues.

    2. What work do you do?

    I am currently working as a low (LV) and medium voltage (MV) Estimator at Eaton South Africa.

    3. How long have you been in the industry?

    I have been in the engineering industry for 9 years now, working across different engineering roles.

    4. Has your work always been your passion? Tell us why.

    Ever since I was a child, I have always been drawn to electrical engineering. The mysteries of electricity captivated me, and I often found myself intrigued about how it functions and how Eskom manages to deliver power to our homes, lighting up our lives.

    5. Being a woman in the industry – what does it take?

    In these sectors, assertiveness and clear communication are crucial skills. While it may feel daunting at first, do not let fear hold you back. Embrace your ability to communicate effectively and confidently and express your ideas.

    6. What has been the most difficult challenge of your career?

    One significant challenge is that the engineering field is predominantly male, making it easy for women to be overlooked. This requires a great deal of perseverance, dedication, and confidence in one’s abilities. Women possess the same intellect and skills as men and can offer a unique perspective in their interactions.

    7. What advice do you have for other women in your industry?

    I believe young women should explore a diverse range of opportunities, particularly in STEM. It is essential to be enthusiastic about the field you choose. Before pursuing a STEM career, do thorough research and ensure that you enjoy the subject matter. It’s not just about monetary gain but also about finding fulfillment and making a meaningful impact.

    8. Plans for the future?

    I want to remain competitive and accurate in my electrical estimating work, and also I want to stay updated on industry developments and new technologies.
