Retinoid Reaction: A Positive Sign for Your Skin Health

  • Save

A retinoid reaction, while challenging, is a temporary condition that can be easily managed. As the skin gradually adapts to increased levels of vitamin A, the reaction will subside over time, allowing the skin to build tolerance. Dr. Des Fernandes, scientific director at Environ Skin Care, explains that experiencing a transient retinoid reaction is actually a positive sign. “It indicates that your skin needs vitamin A. By slowly and consistently introducing vitamin A, you give your skin the chance to normalise and restore its health.”

He explains that skin cells have vitamin A receptors because it’s such an important molecule in normalising and controlling most aspects of skin functioning. “When the skin is exposed to UV light, both the vitamin A and its receptors on the cell walls are destroyed. This not only depletes the skin of this essential nutrient but also reduces the receptors necessary to process it. Without sufficient receptors, vitamin A cannot be effectively metabolised, leading to a buildup outside the cells which causes chemical irritation—commonly known as a retinoid reaction.”

Environ recently launched two new, intensifying retinol serums recommended as add-on boosters to daily vitamin A topical replenishment. These serums are clinically proven to improve the appearance of wrinkles, firmness, elasticity, hydration, skin tone, and texture.

Common signs of a retinoid reaction and how to treat it

During a retinoid reaction, you may experience dryness, redness, itchiness, and a warm sensation in the skin. While the reaction is temporary, it can be uncomfortable, so knowing how to manage it is essential for easing these symptoms. Fernandes says that if the irritation is severe, you should reduce the frequency of your retinol application.

“You need to give your skin the chance to recover somewhat before gradually reintroducing the product.” He also emphasises the importance of moisturising the skin to soothe, hydrate, and strengthen the skin’s barrier. ‘Incorporating a product like Environ Super Moisturiser is highly recommended, especially for those with dry, sensitive, or dehydrated skin.

It is particularly effective for managing temporary dryness caused by environmental factors or changes in skincare routines, helping to restore the skin’s natural moisture balance.”

Using retinol products for the best result

Fernandes says that there is a lot of hype about retinol and its status as the ‘holy grail’ of ingredients targeting the signs of ageing. Yet retinol remains a source of much confusion for many. “Incorporating retinol into your skincare routine can be a game-changer for achieving smoother, more youthful-looking skin, but it can’t be stressed enough that correctly using this powerful ingredient requires knowledge to benefit from its effects,” says Fernandes.

When introducing retinol, do so only 2-3 times per week. Initially, you can add 1 to 2 drops of retinol serum to your vitamin A moisturiser, mixing and applying it to the face, eye area, and even the neck and décolleté. Once your skin is acclimating well, you can gradually increase the frequency of application and aim to ultimately use retinol on the skin every evening.
