Hey, it’s okay, we all make mistakes – we’re only human! But when it comes to keeping that gorgeous mug of yours feeling and looking healthy, hydrated, and happy, here are the 5 most common skincare mistakes that you really need to stop making. Gorgeous, glowing, totally-grammable skin, we’re coming for you!

#1 – Using the Wrong Cleanser

We’re gonna let you in on a little secret – not all cleansers are created equal. And when you’re using a foaming cleanser that’s packed with harsh ingredients such as SLS or soap, chances are you’re stripping your skin of the natural acids and oils that keep it healthy and happy (think Sunlight liquid on greasy dishes). By cleansing your skin of its natural oils, you’re doing damage to your skin’s natural protective barrier, which is oil-based. That leads to all sorts of problems such as bacterial infection, dryness, sensitivity, and breakouts.

#2 – Switching Skincare Products Too Quickly

Deciding to switch to a simpler, natural skincare routine is a fabulous choice to make (we’re not biased, promise!) but you also need to remember that, when it comes to switching up your skincare, slow and steady definitely wins the race. Your skin takes about 28 days to go through a full regeneration cycle, so when you introduce new products it’s important to remember that you need to give your skin the time it needs to get rid of all the previous toxin build-up. So, rather than diving in face first, introduce one product at a time so that your gorgeous skin doesn’t feel overwhelmed.

#3 – Skipping Toner in Your Routine

It can be tempting to skip a couple of steps (or, shock horror, skip ALL the steps) in your skincare routine at the end of a long day, but those extra couple minutes could be what’s standing between you and fabulously clear skin. A refreshing tonic mist is a total skincare hero because it works to give your skin an instant boost of radiance and antioxidants, gently removes dead skin cells, helps combat blemishes and dark marks, AND guards your skin against harmful free radicals.

#4 – Avoiding Oil with Oily Skin

We know, we know – it sounds a little crazy. Using oil to combat oils? You must be mad! But, stick with us on this one. Oily skin happens when there is an overproduction of sebum (the “oil” that causes blackheads, pimples, etc). This often happens when you’ve overdone it with harsh cleansers and exfoliators which strip the skin’s natural oils. This makes the skin thirsty, and your body then tries to fix it by producing more sebum to compensate. So adding oil to oily skin won’t make your situation worse, promise! Instead, a face oil will work to regulate your skin’s natural oil production, while fabulously moisturising your skin. So, oil + oil = less oil (trust us, it’s science.)

#5 – Not Starting a Good Routine Because You Think It’s Too Late

Turns out, you can teach an old dog new tricks, and you can train your skin to finally embrace the dewy, Kate-Middleton-esque complexion that you’ve been dreaming of. Start off by taking things back to basics, make sure that you’re cutting out the harsh cleansers and the drying ingredients, and most importantly, be patient. Glowy, gorgeous skin is coming for you!
