1. Tell us a bit about yourself.
I am Musa Ncula (27), in Cape Town (South Africa), and originally from the Eastern Cape. A weird fact is that I get thrills from facing the unknown and absolutely love putting my faith into action.
2. What work do you do?
I’m a Business Development Lead for one of Africa’s leading serious games studios, Sea Monster. I realized early on in my young career that while I have the technical skills to geek behind the computer for hours, instead, engaging with people from the business side of things is what sets my heart on fire. I enjoy engaging with people and decision-makers from various industries, taking them on a journey of acting on their pain points and helping them morph plans into sustainable and scalable solutions.
3. How long have you been in the industry?
About 3 years now.
4. Has your work always been your passion? Tell us why?
By nature, I am an enabler, and at the core of everything I commit to, lies an epic meaning and purpose. This is why I have fallen in love with Sea Monster – a company that uses games that are things we know to be just for pure entertainment’s sake, creatively being utilized to make learning attractive and to drive behaviour change. When we look at the devastating stats about our South African education system, being in this industry fuels me with hope and I keep believing that the little bit of work I do on a daily basis contributes to changing the status quo.
5. Being a woman in the industry – what does it take?
The creative industry is quite broad but speaking from the animation and games sphere, this is an industry that continues to define its own standard operational procedures. So, we all need to keep sharpening our skillsets and carve out our own paths. I’d say, it’s important that one has some technical ability. Also, have networks and mentors!
6. What has been the most difficult challenge of your career?
Not believing in myself enough!
7. What advice do you have for other women in your industry?
Everyone is figuring it out and It’s ok not to have all the answers, just GO! With that, humility goes a long way and you don’t owe anyone perfection.
8. Plans for the future?
Being a CEO of a billion-dollar business is definitely in the cards. I am a continuous worker and intentional learning is a big part of my ethos so traveling and learning from the best in the world is my big next focus.
