1. Can you please tell us more about your business?
Change Lab is a creative change management agency, powered by an all-female team. Since 2015, we’ve partnered with some of South Africa’s leading companies to help them navigate complex change. Our tailored services include working with companies to develop targeted change strategies, building awareness and buy-in through creative communications and engagement, and building internal change capability.
2. When, how, and why did you start your business?
I began my change management career 20 years ago at Deloitte Consulting in London. This was in the early days of digital transformation, which was an exciting time to be in the field, fast-paced and challenging, but also very rewarding. I returned to South Africa in 2013 and, seeing a gap in the market, I made the decision to start my own consulting business.
I wanted to build a values-based business that prides itself on delivering visible value in a way that makes a difference both for the companies we support and the people they employ. We started small, one client at a time, and by staying true to our values, we steadily grew into the team we are today. 10 years later, and Change Lab is going toe-to-toe with the big four. It’s a proud moment for me to see how far we have come.
3. What is your role in the business?
As the founder and managing director, I lead the team and steer the overall direction of the business. While I manage the company, I also stay closely connected to both our clients and my team. I provide strategic guidance and ensure that the quality and creativity we’re known for remain at the heart of everything we do.
4. Where did you study, and what did you study?
I achieved both my undergraduate and Honours degree in Industrial Psychology at the University of Cape Town. I was drawn to change management from the start and actively pursued the field both academically and professionally.
5. How did you finance your business?
I am fortunate to have a very supportive husband who created the space for me to quit full-time employment to focus on setting up the Change Lab. The biggest costs in consulting are people resources, which I brought on board as and when we landed a new project. This allowed me to minimise upfront costs and financial risks while we built the business. I didn’t draw a salary until the business was stable and profitable, which took a good few years.
6. Describe your average workday, if such a thing exists.
The nature of consulting is that no two days are the same, and that’s part of what I love about it. My days typically include a mix of getting hands-on with project delivery, providing direction on client projects, and managing the business side of things. I also make enough time to check in with the team, ensuring we stay focused and connected. It’s a balancing act, but it keeps me energised.
7. How do you balance your home life and your work life?
As both a business owner and a mother of two, setting clear boundaries between work and personal life is essential. I’m clear on when and where I need to show up, and give myself permission to step back and rest when I need to. At Change Lab, we’ve built a culture that values flexibility and well-being, but we’re also a high-performing team that shows up, delivers, and gets the job done. It’s a balance we’re proud of.
8. What drives you and inspires you?
I’m driven by the excitement of possibility and the energy that comes with change. I thrive in environments where there’s variety, stimulation, and opportunities to explore new ideas. Whether in business or my personal life, I’m always looking for the next challenge that will stretch my thinking, spark my creativity, and keep me learning. I find inspiration in the momentum of moving forward and the belief that there’s always a new adventure or solution waiting to be discovered.
9. Where and when do you have your best ideas?
My mind is constantly buzzing with new ideas. Sometimes it’s on a walk to the office, other times it’s in the middle of a conversation with the team. Collaboration often sparks creativity for me, especially when we’re workshopping a challenge or exploring a new approach. I’ve also learned to pay attention to those quiet in-between moments, like driving or walking, where the best ideas often sneak up on me.
10. Where and how do you market/advertise your business for sales leads?
A lot of our work comes from word-of-mouth and long-standing client relationships, which is a testament to the quality of our work and the trust we’ve built. We use platforms like LinkedIn and our website to share insights, our success stories, and our approach to change management. Over the years, we’ve built a strong reputation in the industry, and that continues to open doors for new opportunities and partnerships.
11. What is next for your business?
We’re entering an exciting new chapter as a Creative Change Agency. Evolving our offering and embracing the power of technology, AI, and automation to scale our impact. We’re exploring smarter, more efficient ways to deliver change, while staying true to our people-centred approach. We want to push the boundaries of what change management can look like.
12. What advice would you give to female entrepreneurs hoping to start their own business?
If you are passionate about an idea, believe in yourself, and go for it! Build something that reflects who you are as a person. Back yourself, even when it feels uncomfortable, and don’t compromise on your values. Surround yourself with people who buy into your values, but also challenge you. The path isn’t always easy, but it will stretch you, shape you, and be one of the most rewarding things you’ll ever do.
