Spruce Up Your Morning Coffee

Morning coffee is a “must-have” that cannot be missed by many. For some, there are specific coffees that are set aside for the morning, or perhaps they use a technique to ensure that their cup of coffee helps give them ‘that’ extra boost. “Coffee is a serious morning routine for many, and it is something that is non-negotiable.

But often what happens is the same cup every morning can start to lose its effect, and this is when it is time to start looking for exciting new options to make getting out of bed a little easier, especially in winter,” comments Thokozane Radebe, brand manager for coffee brand Douwe Egberts.

Giving yourself something different to drink in the morning, while still including the all-important ingredient – coffee – can help to start the day off on an exciting note. Whether it’s changing the milk to nut-based milk, or perhaps a flavoured syrup instead of the usual sugar, this can all make a difference.

Radebe knows how important coffee is, not only in the morning but throughout the day as well, however, it is that first sip of the day that can awaken the senses. She suggests trying the following ingredients to help get the show on the road:

  • Cinnamon
  • Maple syrup
  • Nutmeg
  • Whipped cream
  • Pumpkin pie spice
  • Sweetened condense milk

Although not all of these will be everyone’s “cup of tea” trying out different variations can give you the taste you are looking for. Use the one suggested below, to give you a new coffee taste in the morning:

Instant Mocha
  • 2tsps cocoa powder 1 tsp Douwe Egberts Pure Gold (or Kenya Mocha for an added Mocha taste)
  • Sugar (according to your personal taste)
  • Hot milk Place into your cup the cocoa powder, coffee, and sugar to taste.
  • Add a splash of milk and stir to form a paste.
  • Once you have a consistent paste add the rest of the hot milk. Stir and serve.
Cinnamon Spice coffee
  • Douwe Egberts Espresso Style 1.5 tablespoons cinnamon syrup Whipped cream Ground cinnamon
  • Pour the cinnamon syrup into a large mug.
  • Pour the prepared coffee into the mug containing the syrup and give it a stir.
  • Once combined, sprinkle some cinnamon and top with whipped cream.

If you would like to enjoy a little indulgence with your coffee during the day, why not try out this delicious Pure Indulgence brownies recipe.

Pure Indulgence brownies
  • 4 eggs 230g
  • melted butter
  • 2 heaped tsp Douwe Egberts Pure Indulgence
  • 140g flour 400g sugar 60g cocoa powder
  • Pinch of salt ½
  • tsp baking powder
  • 2 tsp vanilla essence

Grease a non-stick baking pan and set the oven to 175°C. Place the melted butter and sugar into a bowl and mix until well combined. Then add in the eggs and vanilla. Mix well until lighter in colour. Once this is well combined, sift in the dry ingredients – flour, coffee, cocoa powder, salt, and baking powder.

Gently fold in these ingredients until JUST combined. If you overmix, this will affect the texture of your brownies. Spread the mixture into the pan, and place in the oven for 20-30 minutes. If you prefer your brownies a little firmer, keep them in the oven for a little longer.
