Elbows, knees, knuckles, and toes can become darker than the rest of your body. While this is common, it can become concerning, especially when scrubbing, lotions, and potions don’t work, you could become concerned about what is causing the dark skin tone.

Although there are health issues that could cause darkened skin.

Hyperpigmentation

Hyperpigmentation is when the skin produces too much melanin in one area, making it darker than the rest of your body.

This can happen on different parts of the body, including the face.

Your elbow, knees, and knuckles can also be affected by hyperpigmentation, and because the skin is sometimes tougher than the skin on the rest of your body, they might not respond in the same way as the rest of your body to skin lightening creams and products.

Friction

Friction can affect your skin in different ways, including making it darker this is most obviously true in the skin between your thighs.

According to MD Edge, friction on the elbows, knees, and knuckles can cause hyperkeratosis. This darkened skin is the bodies way of making the skin in areas that have been vulnerable to friction more durable.

Your skin is dry

Knees, elbows, fingers and toes are prone to dryness. Dry skin can become sensitive skin, and your body may feel the need to protect the skin and produce more melanin.

Taking special care of areas of your skin that become dry more frequently than others can help you even out your skin tone.
