With the number of Covid-19 infections on the rise, many women are reluctant to visit hair and beauty salons, opting to take matters into their own hands and do their hair at home. From socially distanced family picnics to video calls with friends and loved ones, the festive season is going to look a little different this year.
“There are ways to look and feel good during the holidays, while still being safe and curbing the spread of the virus,” says Maureen Sibanda, Community Manager at hair-network marketing company, Wukina. “After a difficult year, there’s even more reason to spend time on selfcare, trying a new look or investing in a makeover, while ensuring that you remain Covid-19-free.”
From taking a little extra time to care for their natural hair to sporting a curly wig, women are getting creative in order to maintain their festive season glam. “During lockdown, women were forced to revise their self care routines and got used to doing their own hair. Our Wukina women saw a gap in the market and helped others in their community access premium quality wigs, without risking their wellbeing,” says Sibanda.
The company believes women shouldn’t have to choose between quality or affordability in order to get a new ‘do. “Having the freedom to choose how you do your hair, without being limited by cost or safety concerns, is important. Looking good should be safe and accessible,” says Sibanda.
Wukina network-marketing business model allows women to not only buy wigs, but become a part of a community of entrepreneurs who sell hair too. “We started the business to empower women, enabling them to earn an income to make ends meet,” says Sibanda.
Over lockdown, the company saw a significant increase in sign-ups to the programme, with many women searching for an additional income stream to keep their families afloat. “Those who joined the programme got the chance to pursue a career in entrepreneurship and work closely with other women to establish their business.”
Offering free delivery and a quality guarantee, Wukina offers a wide range of wigs to give women the freedom to chop and change their look, throughout the December break. The company’s business-in-a-box model, which will be expanding to selling haircare products in the new year, provides the necessary toolkit to start a new business. Working closely with resellers to help them establish their own entrepreneurial venture, the business aims to empower and grow female entrepreneurs.
