1. Can you please tell us more about your business?
A. We are a 100% female black-owned construction company, we specialize in General Building, Civil landscaping, and Electrical Engineering services. We offer full turn-key solutions from architectural plans to supervised projects, new builds and renovations, and facilities management. Our team of engineers and artisans are highly skilled with years of experience.
2. When, how and why did you start your business?
A. As a young child, I always knew I wanted to be in business, From assisting my parents with their day-to-day business routine in their Spaza shop to managing their public phone containers. Because of this, I registered my company in 2011, however, I still had a full-time job. The plan was to make extra money while I was still working full time, and I ended up opening a clothing boutique in Pretoria under the clothing line “NEN”, I closed it down because it was draining me financially, In fact, I lost more than I invested in that shop. I resigned from my full-time job in 2012 and that’s when I embarked further on a journey as an entrepreneur.
3. What is your role in the business?
A. I am Director and I also work as a Project Manager from time to time to assist especially on new projects.
4. Where did you study and what did you study?
A. I studied electrical engineering at Tshwane University of Technology, I dropped out during my first year due to financial difficulties, a year later I enrolled at Tshwane South College of Engineering that’s where I obtained my Engineering N.Diploma. I later qualified as an Artisan in 2020 and I also obtained a two-year scholarship with NHBRC in collaboration with GIBS on a women in construction empowerment program till 2023. I am also in a process of completing a GCC engineering Qualification.
5. How did you finance your business?
A. From my pocket, I used all my savings to start my business.
6. Describe your average workday, if such a thing exists?
A. I am such a perfectionist, I love getting my hands dirty, and I’m always on site and make sure that everything runs smoothly.
7. How do you balance your home life and your work life?
A. The construction industry has lots of challenges and it can be so draining if you’re not emotionally and physically strong. I always make sure that I don’t take the stress at home, and when is time for my family, I literally shut down and focus on them.
8. What drives you and inspires you?
A. Leading a team to success, Learning new things, coming up with creative ideas to improve our goals as a business.
9. Where and when do you have your best ideas?
A. When I am at a peaceful and quiet place.
10. Where and how do you market/ advertise your business for sales leads?
A. Through word of mouth, and approaching big business for sub-contracting opportunities.
11. What is next for your business?
A. I recently bought an 8ton drop site Truck, I want to buy more construction equipment such as water tankers, Graders, TLB, and Excavators and rent them out.
12. What advice would you give to female entrepreneurs hoping to start their own business?
A. Start with what you have, starting a business isn’t easy, from creating a business plan to secure funding, anything can go wrong, however, with a solid and strong support system, a woman can become a successful entrepreneur. Don’t be afraid of pursuing the road less traveled.
