#WIB – Q&A With Loretta Sanderson – HR Consultant

1. Could you tell us a bit about your business?

A: I run a HR Consultancy business which includes a full HR outsourcing service for small to medium-sized business.  I also do recruitment, career coaching, run personal development workshops and give motivational talks.

2. When, how and why did you start Loretta Sanderson HR Consulting?

A: I started my business in January 2019 after deciding to leave corporate after 21 years.

3. What and where did you study and how did you finance your business?

A: After finishing school, I studied computer programming but realized very early on that my passion is people and I eventually ended up in Human Resources.  I studied Labour Law through Unisa and did a Management Development Programme through Wits Business School.

4. What is your role in the company? 

A: I do everything – marketing, planning, finances, research, networking, sourcing etc.

5. Describe your average workday, if such a thing exists.

A: One of the things I love about working for myself is that no two days are the same.  I can be chairing a disciplinary enquiry in the morning, making a job offer mid-day and presenting a workshop in the afternoon. 

6. How do you balance your homelife & worklife? 

A: I have a very supportive husband and am almost an empty nester.  My daughter is teaching English in Vietnam and my son is planning to move overseas later this year.  That will leave my husband and I at home with our 3 dogs!  Having said that, I think one of the biggest challenges of running your own business is time management.

 7. Where and when do you have your best ideas? 

A: When I am praying/meditating, driving, in the shower, chatting to friends, walking on the beach.  We need to take time to think, to be still and quieten our minds, and then ideas will come.

8. Where and how do you market/advertise your business for sales leads?

A: A lot of my local business comes from referrals and word of mouth and I also partner with other business owners in PE, Johannesburg and Cape Town.  Other than that, I use social media, especially LinkedIn and Facebook.    

9. What is next for Loretta Sanderson HR Consulting?

A: My dream is to make a difference in people’s lives and leave a legacy by passing on what I have learned in my career.  I want to encourage others to find their purpose, live intentionally and achieve their goals.   There is so much untapped potential in all of us.  I would love to play a part in inspiring others to live their dreams.

10. What advice would you give to female entrepreneurs hoping to start their own business?

A: Get clarity on what, who, when, where and how. Speak to others who have gone ahead of you.  Keep learning and growing.  Enjoy the journey and go for it!
