It is to be expected that during winter our chances of getting a cold or the flu are increased. According to John Hopkins Medicine colds and flu are more common in colder months as people are indoors more often allowing viruses to pass easily from one person to another. The cold air also plays a role in weakening the body’s resistance.
“Winter brings with it not only cold weather but coughing, sneezing and blocked noses. Often, we assume it is the flu when it is actually a cold, but how do we know the difference? Plus, let’s not mention the confusion around which remedies we should make use of to help stave off the symptoms,” comments Bronwyn Ragavan, brand manager for Karvol.
As the weather starts to cool down, Ragavan suggests doing a cabinet “stock take” to determine which essentials need to be bought – but what are these? “The truth is many symptoms of the flu, and the common cold are similar. If you have products to help deal with these, you are on the right track,” comments Ragavan. Symptoms such as body aches, a sore throat, runny or stuffy noses and a cough are common with both illnesses and your cabinet should be able to handle these.
Ragavan recommends the following cold and flu essentials:
Decongestants are needed to help combat nasal congestion that can make breathing difficult and affect sleep and daily activities. Karvol chest rub and Karvol can help combat the symptoms of congestion and can turn a restless night into a peaceful sleep. The basic ingredients in Karvol, such as aromatic oils like eucalyptus, camphor, thymol, lavender and menthol work actively to provide easy breathing and a clear head.
Pain and fever relievers are needed to provide relief from headaches, muscle aches and fever associated with colds and flu.
Cough suppressants/expectorants are needed to stop disruptive coughs from keeping you awake at night or affecting your productivity. Suppressants help to quiet persistent coughs, while expectorants help to loosen mucus. If a cough persists, you will need to see a doctor.
Lozenges need to be kept handy to help with those painful sore throats. Perfect for relief from the pain, plus a selection of different flavours will let your family choose their favourite.
Sterilising agents are good to have and use in the house to keep the germs away. Milton Sterilising Spray can handle any sterilising especially while someone in the house is feeling under the weather. Use it on counters, the outside of the bottles, even the remote. This will help reduce the spread of germs.
“Stocking up on the relevant products to help with the winter colds and flu will allow you to be in control when the symptoms start, especially at night,” comments Ragavan. “However, should these at home remedies not help, you will need to see the GP.”
